Key Points

  • The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ will close on January 9, 2025, to honor former President Jimmy Carter.
  • This closure is part of a National Day of Mourning declared by the U.S. government.
  • Such closures are customary following the passing of a former president.

The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ will suspend trading on January 9, 2025, as the nation observes a day of mourning for former President Jimmy Carter. The bond market will close early, at 2:00 p.m. ET, in line with recommendations from the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

This follows President Joe Biden’s proclamation of a National Day of Mourning, which coincides with Carter’s state funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Biden also ordered flags to be flown at half-staff for 30 days in tribute to Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 on December 29, 2024.

Honoring Jimmy Carter

The NYSE’s decision to close on January 9 is consistent with its long-standing tradition of suspending operations to honor former presidents. The practice dates back to 1885, when the exchange closed to mark the death of President Ulysses S. Grant. More recently, the NYSE closed in 2018 to pay respects to President George H.W. Bush.

“Jimmy Carter, with humble roots as a farmer and family man, devoted his life to public service and defending our freedom,” said Lynn Martin, President of NYSE Group, in a press release. “During his noteworthy post-presidential life, President Carter left an enduring legacy of humanitarianism. The NYSE will respectfully honor President Carter’s lifetime of service to our nation by closing our markets on the National Day of Mourning.”

What To Expect On January 9

The NYSE, NASDAQ, and related equity and options markets will remain closed for the entire day. However, private businesses and most banks are expected to remain open. Investors should plan accordingly, as trading activities on major U.S. exchanges will be suspended until January 10.

While January 9 is not a national holiday, federal employees will have the day off unless designated as essential. Workers in the financial sector may also receive the day off, depending on employer policies. For example, all postal workers will be off on January 9, 2025, so mail will not be delivered.

However, remember that other markets, such as international exchanges and the cryptocurrency market, will be open.

The day serves as an opportunity for Americans to reflect on the legacy of a leader who dedicated his life to service, diplomacy, and humanitarianism.
