There are some genres that just feel like they were made for a touchscreen device, and visual novels and tabletop RPGs are two that immediately come to mind. A gorgeous, impossibly high resolution screen to enjoy all the artwork of a visual novel, as well as being able to easily keep track of any branching pathways the story might take if it’s more of a “choose your own adventure" style. Then there’s tabletop RPGs which can have complex systems, scoring, or rules to keep track of in the physical world that you can just kick back and let your device take care of for you. Hey, there’s nothing like the feel of physical books or board games but the convenience factor of playing digital versions of these types of games can’t be ignored. With developer Different Tales releasing their Werewolf: The Apocalypse — Purgatory on iOS devices in just a couple of weeks, as well as on console and PC, I imagine its blending of visual novel with tabletop RPG elements will suit the touchscreen quite well. Check out the trailer.
Werewolf: The Apocalypse — Purgatory takes place in the Werewolf: The Apocalypse universe, from the Classic World of Darkness game series, and follows Samira, an Afghan werewolf and refugee, as she flees her homeland and gets caught up in Poland during a border crisis. There are two main story branches to pursue, one where you’re helping to solve a supernatural murder and one where you’re investigating a heinous pack of murderous werewolves. Every decision you make will impact the story and uncover details about Samira and her own problems and inner demons. This is the second Werewolf: The Apocalypse game Different Tales has released following Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Heart of the Forest just a few weeks ago, and while Purgatory is its own standalone story fans who have played through Heart of the Forest will see some familiar characters and locations. Werewolf: The Apocalypse — Purgatory is set to launch on July 23rd at a price of $9.99 on iOS and $14.99 on PC and consoles, and is available for pre-order on the App Store right now.
